New Orleans Pelicans hire ex-Magic coach Jamahl Mosley as their new head coach

The New Orleans Pelicans have chosen former Orlando Magic coach Jamahl Mosley as their next head coach, finalizing a quick return to the sidelines just weeks after his departure from Orlando. Mosley reportedly agreed to a five-year contract after an extensive coaching search that also included candidates such as Darvin Ham, Rajon Rondo and Steve Hetzel.

Mosley replaces former Pelicans coach Willie Green, who was dismissed early in the 2025-26 season after New Orleans stumbled to a 2-10 start. Assistant coach James Borrego stepped in on an interim basis and guided the team to a 24-46 finish, but the organization ultimately decided to move in a different direction.

Pelicans executive vice president Joe Dumars praised Mosley’s leadership and player development track record while announcing the hire. “Jamahl has earned tremendous respect across the NBA for his leadership, professionalism, and the strong relationships he develops with players and staff,” Dumars said. “He has consistently demonstrated an ability to develop young talent while establishing teams that compete with toughness, discipline, and togetherness.”

The 47-year-old spent five seasons leading the Orlando Magic, compiling a 189-221 regular-season record while helping transform the franchise from a rebuilding team into a consistent playoff contender. Orlando reached the postseason in each of the last three years under Mosley, though the team failed to advance beyond the first round. His exit followed Orlando’s disappointing playoff collapse against the Detroit Pistons after surrendering a 3-1 series lead. Reports also indicated tensions developed between Mosley and star forward Paolo Banchero during the season.

Now Mosley inherits another challenging rebuild in New Orleans. The Pelicans finished 26-56 last season and face major questions surrounding the future of stars Zion Williamson and Dejounte Murray, both of whom have struggled with injuries. Forward Trey Murphy III also surfaced in trade rumors throughout the season. The roster still features promising young pieces, including rookies Derik Queen and Jeremiah Fears, along with veterans Jordan Poole and Saddiq Bey.
