Pirates sign rookie SS Konnor Griffin to record-breaking 9-year, $140M contract extension

The Pittsburgh Pirates have committed to their future by signing rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin to a nine-year, $140 million contract extension, the team announced Wednesday. The deal, which runs through the 2034 season, marks the largest contract in franchise history and the richest ever awarded to an MLB rookie.

Griffin, widely regarded as baseball’s top prospect, was selected ninth overall in the 2024 MLB Draft and made his major league debut just days ago. The agreement also includes a $12 million signing bonus and performance-based incentives tied to MVP voting. By finalizing the extension after his debut, the Pirates remain eligible for a Prospect Promotion Incentive draft pick if Griffin earns major awards early in his career.

Club owner Bob Nutting said: “Signing Konnor is a meaningful commitment to this team, this city and our fans. It reflects our belief in Konnor, in this season’s club and in the future of our organization. Konnor represents everything we value in a player: exceptional talent, strong character, a team-first mentality and a maturity that stood out to all of us from the beginning. At just 19, Griffin has already shown remarkable promise. Across 127 minor league games, he posted a .336 batting average with 21 home runs, 95 RBIs, and an impressive 68 stolen bases, quickly rising through the system and earning Minor League Player of the Year honors. His early MLB performance has been modest—3-for-17 with a double and three RBIs—but the organization remains confident in his long-term impact.

“It feels great knowing I will be a Pittsburgh Pirate for a long time,” Griffin said. “The goal is to win every year. And I believe we can do that. It will be nice to have everything behind me and now I can just go play baseball.”
