Rory McIlroy wins 2026 Masters, becoming the fourth player to ever win back-to-back green jackets

Rory McIlroy delivered a dramatic finish at Augusta on Sunday, securing his second consecutive Masters title and cementing his place among golf’s legends. With the victory, he becomes just the fourth player to win back-to-back green jackets, joining Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods.

The win didn’t come easily. McIlroy stormed out to a six-shot lead after two rounds, highlighted by a brilliant 65 on Friday, but stumbled on Saturday with a 73 that erased his cushion and left him tied for the lead heading into the final round. Suddenly, what looked like a dominant run turned into a test of resilience.

Sunday brought more turbulence. Early mistakes—including a double bogey and another dropped shot—opened the door for challengers like Cameron Young and Justin Rose, both of whom briefly held the lead. But McIlroy steadied himself with key birdies, including a pivotal stretch around Amen Corner, where he regained control. One of the defining moments came at the 12th hole, where McIlroy struck his approach to within seven feet—setting up a crucial birdie that helped him pull ahead for good. From there, he held firm despite late pressure from Scottie Scheffler, who charged up the leaderboard to finish just one shot behind.

Even the final hole brought drama. McIlroy’s tee shot veered into trouble, forcing a recovery from the trees and a bunker. Still, he managed to get up and down safely, sealing a one-shot victory at 12-under. “I can’t believe I waited 17 years to win one green jacket, and I win two in a row,” McIlroy said afterward. “I think all my perseverance at this golf tournament over the years has started to pay off. … So happy to hang in there and get the job done.”

The victory marks McIlroy’s sixth major title, tying him with Faldo and placing him alongside greats like Lee Trevino and Phil Mickelson on the all-time list. It also caps a remarkable turnaround at Augusta, a course that once brought him repeated heartbreak. Now, after years of near-misses and setbacks, McIlroy has not only conquered Augusta—he’s done it twice in a row, elevating his legacy to a new level in the process.
